The Company |

Frank M. Flower and Sons has been in the shellfish business in Oyster
Bay since 1887. From that |
time until the early 1960's the firm based its operation on the
management of naturally set oysters, |
clams and mussels on its leased shellfish lands in Oyster Bay. Some
shellfish seed was purchased |
from other shellfish farmers. With declining natural sets in the 1950's
it became necessary to supple- |
ment the natural supply with shellfish raised in a hatchery. Under the
supervision of H. Butler Flower |
our own 5000 square foot hatchery was built in 1962. Oyster seed has
been produced every year |
since then and clam production began in the early 1970's. Due to our
successful hatchery operation |
our company has been able to expand its work force to approximately 50
people. |
In recent years increased efficiency in shellfish culture has enabled us
to produce seed in excess of |
our needs. As a result we have been marketing oyster and clam seed to
many of the Towns on Long |
Island as well as individual aquaculturists. We would like to take this
opportunity to present our price |
list and encourage Long Island shellfish culturists to utilize Long
Island grown seed. |
We do participate in the bidding process to accommodate Long Island
Towns. We do not, however |
deliver or ship seed. It is our policy to have the purchaser visit our
hatchery site to examine and count |
the seed which they are about to buy. If they decide that they do not
want the seed (which has never |
happened) we will gladly plant the seed on our leased lands in Oyster
Bay. |
